Spring is a wonderful time to visit Palm Springs, California, with your pooch. Along Palm Canyon Drive you will find many stores set out dog water bowls for your thirsty canine companion as well as many restaurants offering al fresco dining for you and Fido.
Located directly behind City Hall, the Palm Springs Dog Park is a 1.6 acre park where dogs can run free and their owners can socialize in a beautiful environment. The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission and Dog Park Subcommittee commissioned artist Phill Evans to design and build an unusual iron fence equipped with double gates that will not only be pleasing to the eye, but also insures that no dogs can run out when someone enters the park.
The Palm Springs Dog Park features grass, trees, awnings, a fenced off area for smaller dogs, recycled picnic benches and trash bins, pooper scoopers, 11 antique fire hydrants (canine bathroom facilities!), and dual-drinking fountains made to accommodate both the low-to-the-ground pooches and their taller owners! Everyone is expected to clean up after their pet and see that their dogs exhibit appropriate behavior. (City of Palm Springs: 760.322.8362)
If you and Fido are the hiking type, according to the Desert Sun newspaper, dogs are welcome on a number of trails in Palm Springs, Mecca Hills and the Santa Rosa’s. Be sure to bring the sunscreen and plenty of water for yourself and your little buddy.
Working up an appetite after all that shopping and hiking leads you to Bones-n-Scones Pet Bakery located on Sunny Dunes Road. Bones-n-Scones opened its’ doors seven years ago, the vision of two devoted pet owners who searched out the very best natural foods and supplements for your pets. With treats like Liver Kisses and Apple Snaps, you will have no problem convincing your furry companion to visit this wonderful doggie oasis in the desert.
