Dachshund – G.W. Little

Dachshund Dog Breed Information

Any dog that has a quoted description that goes "A half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long" must be fun to have around, right? Well, in the Dachshund's case that's definitely true. Although they were originally bred to flush out badgers and other small mammals, Dachshunds today enjoy the life of a true family dog.

There are 3 varieties of Dachshund, the wire-haired, the short-haired, and the long-haired. With each of these varieties come 3 sizes: normal, miniature, and toy, so you've definitely got your work cut out picking from this breed!

Dachshunds are very lively, proud, bold dogs that can be stubborn at times. They are, however, extremely affectionate and devoted to their family but can be difficult to train sometimes. They'll be protective of kids and they have surprising stamina for such little dogs!

Be aware that these little dogs are curious and like to dig, so if you've got a prize-winning flower garden you'd better put up a fence just in case. Dachshunds also like to bark, and they can bark pretty loud for such a little dog.

Dachshunds don't need a lot of exercise, which makes them great for apartment living, but be careful not to over feed this breed as they can gain weight quickly. They're prone to back problems because of their elongated shape, and if they become overweight this can only add to the strain on their back.
