The Silky Terrier was developed in Australia by crossing native Australian Terriers and imported English Yorkshire Terriers. Unlike its ancestors, the Silky was bred purely to be a companion animal not a working terrier breed. A true "toy terrier" the Silky maintains an assertive terrier spirit that is quick, friendly and responsive.
Silky's are definitely not your traditional lap dog. They have plenty of energy and love playing around the house. They are very intelligent and curious dogs and love to be out in the yard exploring or digging.
Silky Terriers do well with children if they're raised with them early, but do not like being rough-handled or teased. They are a great watch-dog, and if not properly disciplined they can become barkers.
Silky Terriers do need daily brushing because of their long coats, and this will take at least 15 minutes per day. It sheds very little, however, so at least you'll save time with your vacuuming!
