Originally kept by Buddhist as prized companions, the Shih Tzu later became special palace pets for the Chinese Emperors. Highly esteemed for their outgoing, carefree and affectionate nature these beautiful little dogs, with the big-dog attitude, are now valued as wonderful house pets.

Shih Tzu's come with enough character to fill a book, and a spunky attitude that makes you believe they're three times their size. They are loyal, affectionate, and love being with their family.

Shih Tzu's can be stubborn at times and can be difficult to housebreak. They require consistent, patient training early on to prevent them from going potty in the house. They make excellent watchdogs and won't just "bark" for the heck of it.

Shih Tzu's are pretty good with older children, and love to play. When they are tired or bothered too much their slight arrogance will show and they might get temperamental. Younger children might get snapped at when they are like this.

Because of their long coat they require daily grooming. Their fur is really more like hair so they make excellent pets for people suffering from allergies.

The Shih Tzu was first registered with the AKC in 1969. For more information on this fascinating little breed visit the American Shih Tzu Club website or the American Kennel Club. If you would like to adopt a Shih Tzu you can visit www.usshihtzurescue.com, or PetFinder.com.
