Like the Cairn and the Westie, the Scottish Terrier originated in Scotland and was first known as the Aberdeen Terrier. They were originally used to hunt den animals such as fox, badger, and rabbit.

Today Scotties are used primarily as companion animals and show dogs. They make good family pets if they're not placed in a home with small children. If pushed too far they can get snappy, and they should never be hit or played with aggressively. When gentle, firm training is used and the Scottie knows his place, they make wonderful pets.

The Scottie's personality is at once playful and also dignified. They're highly intelligent, brave, extremely loyal to their family, and very determined when they want something! They are quite the character and exhibit a wide range of moods and personalities.

Scotties make great watchdogs and only bark to announce strangers. Because of their past history as a hunting dog they must be walked on leash or they'll be off chasing squirrels before you can turn around! They also love to dig, so if you have a landscaped yard you'll need to supervise your Scottie while they're outside.

Scotties don't need a lot of exercise to stay healthy and happy, but they would love to have a yard to romp and play in. If you enjoy being outside throwing balls endlessly, then the Scottie is the perfect dog for you. That's their favorite pastime!

Scotties have been beloved by many famous people, including 3 Presidents, Humphrey Bogart, Shirley Temple, E.B. White, Bette Davis, and Julie Andrews.
