Yes, believe it or not but the Dandy Dinmont is named after a fictional character in Sir Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering. They were originally bred for the same purpose as most other terriers, to hunt down vermin. They excel at it, especially catching mice. Now, they are much sought after for companion dogs.

Today's Dandy Dinmont makes an excellent family dog. They do ok with older children that are well behaved. They're very kindly, affectionate, lively dogs that have an independent streak a mile-wide! They're very intelligent and can be trained easier than some other terriers, although they can be stubborn so consistence is necessary to drive home the lessons. They're loyal to their family and make a good watchdog.

Dandy Dinmont's are an extremely rare breed, and there is much concern that they will become extinct before too long.

The Dandy is longer than he is tall, and they are a fairly healthy breed. If they're allowed to become overweight they can have back problems when they're older.

Dandy's do not need a ton of exercise and will do ok in an apartment if they get regular walks. They should never be allowed off-leash unless they're contained in a fence because they love chasing cats and squirrels, and even the best trained Dandy will take off in hot pursuit!

Although Dandy Dinmonts shed very little they do require brushing every other day, and professional grooming is recommended every 4-6 weeks.
