The self-important Brussels Griffon was originally developed in Belgium from the German Affenpinscher and the Belgian street dog. Initially utilized as a ratter by Belgian stablemen, this diminutive worker soon developed into the companion dog we know today.

Anyone who has seen the movie "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholson will know this breed's cute little face. "Verdel," the Brussels in the movie, stole the show and raised awareness on this often overlooked breed.

Sturdy, independent and highly intelligent, the Brussels Griffon makes a committed and affectionate friend. Their high intelligence can make for a sensitive and sometimes stubborn personality. They can be a bit difficult to housetrain because of this. They are also not suited to a household with children. They're incredibly fragile, and children by their very nature can be clumsy, no matter how well-meaning they are. Brussels are better off in a family of dominant adults who are willing to law down the law consistently. Their willfulness really shines through sometimes!

That being said, Brussels can and do make wonderful, loving pets. They don't require a lot of exercise, they shed very little, and are very spunky and eccentric, making them fun to watch and interact with. They also make great watchdogs!

The Brussels Griffon was first registered with the AKC in 1910.
