The high energy Chihuahua is the smallest of all dog breeds. Revered as sacred members of the community, the ancestors of the modern day breed made their first recorded appearance in history in the 9th century A.D.
The Toltec civilization of Mexico kept a mute breed of dog called the Techichi. This breed laid the foundation for today’s Chihuahua. Tiny, alert and tons of fun, the Chihuahua is now the perfect pocket pet.
Due to their size, Chihuahuas are not recommended for families with children. They can easily be stepped or sat on, and children can quickly injure them if they’re not careful. Chihuahuas do better in a home with adults, and as an only pet. They do, however, get along well with their own kind, and make excellent watchdogs.
Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal dogs and can quickly become attached to just one or two people. They require tons of attention, but due to their sweet personality this is not hard to give! They’re easy to take care of, but must at all costs be protected from the cold weather. Chihuahuas are definitely inside dogs. They do very well in small homes and apartments, and do not require a lot of exercise.
The Chihuahua can be difficult to train, but with a little patience and consistently they can do very well. It’s also a must that they are socialized early.
